Developing Your Technical Career

Take responsibility for the development of your career as a scientist or engineer

As a technical employee, you need to assert yourself in developing your career. You need to determine what do you want out of your career. Do you want more responsibility? Do you want a steady eight to five job that pays well, but leaves you free for an active personal life? Would you like to manage people? Would you like to manage large projects? Is prestige important? and so on.....

Once you start to answer these questions and others, you will have to determine if you possess the skills and personality to achieve your goals. This is where you need to ask for feedback from those around you - family, friends, peers and managers. It is sometimes the case that you may feel more competent than you exactly are perceived to be. Once you identify areas that need improvement (and we all have areas that need improvement), develop a plan with help of a mentor or coach.
