Advancement up the technical or managerial ladder usually occurs after leadership is demonstrated
Eventually your career will reach a point that your continued advancement with be based on your leadership skills.
You will no longer be able to do all the assignments given to you by yourself. You will need other
people to help you achieve your objectives. Your ability to motivate and inspire will
become as important as your technical knowledge. Most scientists and engineers have difficulty with the
transition from a "do"er to a "lead"er where they have to rely on others getting the details
done. Areas of leadership to consider improving are leading a small team,
evaluating performance, giving feedback, coaching,
and mentoring.
