Learning Proper Industrial Safety Practices

Discussion of Laboratory Safety and Government Regulations

Most universities are doing a better job these days with educating engineers and science related graduates. However, the standards and practices that are encountered in industry are usually beyond the scope of the academic institution. All companies have safety and health policies. If you have not been informed of the ones that related to your position, NOW is the time to find out. Specifically, it is a federal regulation that you have given Material Safety and Data Sheets (commonly called MSDS's) for any substances that you use. These cover toxicity, permissible limits, possible first aid treatments, etc. For example, did you know that concentrated acetic acid (diluted acetic acid is called vinegar) may cause prenatal defects? Other important government regulations include the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Toxic Substance Control Act. These cover worker safety and material handling.
